We operate a private jet and fly into Cannes frequently.
On Monday 2nd August we were arriving into Cannes airfield and were about 4 miles off the coast whilst the radar vectors turned us into the airfield, when we turned to fly north towards the coast line, and as we turned we spotted what looked like a boat. However as we got a little nearer we say that it was in fact a whale and was spouting a number of time as we passed overhead. The form of the whale could clearly be seen as it swam in a north easterly direction, but it would be hard to estimate the size. From our height of 2000 feet we think it could have been around 40 feet in length, but could not be definite.
We are not sure if this is an unusal sighting or if other sightings had been made, but as your website explains they are known about
